WHAT is the assignment?
At Orientation, we are going to ask each groups (or pairs of groups) and ask you to choose a problem, and explain a solution to a problem of your choosing through a collaborative building/construction fair. Innovation can start simply with thinking about a challenge and solutions in a way that others have not imagined.
You will work with the same group members at orientation (or a combined group, depending on how many of you attend).
You'll design What your group creates can simply be a metaphor/prototype that represents a possible design solution. We don't want to reveal too much, but this activity will get you started towards that goal.
First Prompt.
Choose a problem and a potential solution. Criteria are:
- NOT global in scale, it must be regional---regions can be geographies, locations (like part of an ocean, part of a country or a small country), or something unique to a particular area or demographic population or species. The demographic group could be spread out globally.
- A problem that affects 100s of millions of people, it should impact ~100,000 to 10 million people (it can also be a problem that does not impact people, but still must be regional).
- NOT Something that affects you personally.
- NOT Something that is unique to North Carolina or an area within North Carolina. Instead of think globally, act locally, we are asking you to think regionally outside your 'bubble' within North Carolina.
Have your group list all of your ideas, and come up with a way to 'vote' the top two ideas. Your groups job is to a) report the original list b) A description of the process you came up with to vote the top two ideas c) a two sentence description of both 'designs' and the challenge that it solves.
Second Prompt.
Myers Briggs and Grit. You will complete a Myers Brigg assessment as part of this module. Later in this course, you will read about how 'grit' is a term identified in the field of psychology that may label how well someone handles challenges or adversity. Collectively (summarizing your collective experiences), how does the Myers Brigg 'label' make your group members feel about the label representing your personalities.
HOW Should WE Complete It?
ALL group member must collaboratively type and write on the Google Doc. You are welcome to use Google Hangout, other tools, text messaging or social apps, but all group members need to add their ideas and collaboratively write the final product. You should:
- NOT have just one person summarize all the answers.
- NOT just paste together everyone's contribution without synthesis
- NOT make up for a group member that doesn't contribute.
Google Docs logs all of your contributions to a document via its revision history. The instructor can see who made every change. Your group can decide how much you should write to completely respond to the question and synthesize your ideas.
WHY should I complete this assignment?
Group work is key to NCSSM and college assignments (yes, more college instructors are adding in group work too). Groups aren't going away---and even on a large college campus groups will collaborate virtually. We want you to demonstrate you can work effectively in a group.
HOW do I submit this assignment?
All group members must collaboratively write the document using your NCSSM Google Account.
- One group member should create a Google Doc called "Non-Cognitive Group Response" and share with the group collaborators.
- In Google Drive (drive.ncssm.edu), group members will see the file appear under the "Shared" directory. You can drag the file into your portfolio folder.
- Type the names of the collaborators/group members at the top of the document.
- Group members should collaboratively write the document in Google (Google Docs records what each group member contributes).
- All group members should individually submit the Google URL (not the file) below in Canvas.
- Make sure you have shared the document with edit privileges (not view only), in Google, with your instructor and have enabled comments and given edit privileges to your instructor.
HOW are WE graded?
If you do not collaboratively write, you will not receive credit. Make sure you all write and edit the document----don't have just one person do the writing.
- 60 points. The group effectively answer the questions and combine everyone's ideas together, and for the first prompt, thoroughly describe your process of coming to consensus.
- 40 points. The individual contribution is evident, you included your own ideas and helped develop the groups response.
WHAT is Next?
You will continue working with this group at orientation on some design activities, and further discussing your Myers Brigg label, Academic Engagement Rubric and the future readings on Grit. At Orientation, we will have everyone also assess themselves on grit.
