Why Use Panopto?

Panopto has many benefits to teaching and learning that you simply don’t get whenever you upload a video to Google Drive or YouTube.

Searchability

Anytime you upload a video to Panopto, your videos is automatically scanned so that text on PowerPoint slides or whiteboards is searchable. Even spoken words are searchable. So, if you need to locate a video you created about Coulomb's Law, you can simply search for it.

Notes & Discussions

In Panopto, students can type their notes directly in the viewer window. Their notes stay synced up with the video, allowing them to find specific moments in a video much easier when reviewing.

Panopto also allows students to discuss a video together, even if they do not all watch it at the same time. Each video has a discussion forum that can also be accessed from within the viewer window. As the teacher, you can also provide notes that display alongside the video.

Chapter Markers

If you wish to direct students' attention to specific moment in the video, you can create chapter markers.

Analytics

Panopto allows you to see who is watching your videos. Students will be listed by name, alongside the length of time they viewed the video. You can view data for entire folders of videos or for individual videos.

Analytics can be very helpful. They can show you times in your videos when viewership numbers may drop off. This can help you know when videos are too long, or you may be losing the students' interest. Spots in the video with increased viewership can inform you of trouble spots you may need to focus longer on in class. When students rewatch a video, if often means they are confused by the topic.

Quizzing

You can insert quiz questions directly in Panopto videos. These can be used for ungraded, informal student self-reviews, or they can be used for graded assignments. All results from quizzes in Panopto can be automatically added to the Canvas gradebook.

Quizzing in Panopto can inform you of students' understanding, and can also encourage student participation.
